Even on a grey March afternoon, there’s something about the arrival of an ice cream van that instantly lifts the mood. Today at The Royal Oak in Walgrave, we welcomed a special visitor to the pub car park - the Rocky’s Gelato ice cream van, which came along to help mark the end of the school term.
Despite classic British weather with rain in the air, it was still a wonderful moment for families, children and locals stopping by for a sweet treat. While the van’s visit was a special one-off occasion, Rocky’s ice cream is actually available all year round here at the pub, and also next door in the village community shop.
That means anyone visiting Walgrave can enjoy a scoop whenever the mood strikes - whether it’s after lunch, following a countryside walk, or simply as an afternoon indulgence.

The Story Behind Rocky’s Gelato
Rocky’s Gelato has a fascinating story that begins more than a century ago.
The roots of the brand trace back to 1882, when Eliseo Rocchiccioli left his home in Barga, a small town in Tuscany, Italy, and travelled to England looking for opportunity. Like many Italian migrants of the time, he brought with him a passion for making ice cream using traditional methods.
Eliseo began selling his handcrafted ice cream in London, pushing a cart through the streets and serving freshly made gelato to customers throughout the city. His surname was difficult for locals to pronounce, and before long people simply began calling him “Rocky.” The nickname stuck - and eventually became the name of the business.
Today, that Italian heritage lives on in Rocky’s Gelato, but the story has expanded to include another important place - Northamptonshire.
Rocky’s Gelato is now produced using high-quality British dairy and ingredients sourced from farms in the Midlands, combining Italian gelato craftsmanship with the rich milk and produce of the English countryside. This blend of Italian tradition and British farming is something the company proudly refers to as “Britalian” - a partnership of Italian heritage and British ingredients.
It’s a fitting combination. Just as Eliseo once travelled from Italy to England bringing his skills with him, Rocky’s Gelato today connects those same traditions with local communities across the Midlands, including right here in Walgrave.
When visitors enjoy a scoop of Rocky’s ice cream at The Royal Oak, they’re tasting more than just a dessert - they’re experiencing a story that began in an Italian hill town over a century ago and now continues here in Northamptonshire villages today.
